    Fire Damages Three Homes in Kansas

    A three-alarm fire that started in a vacant house in Independence on Jan. 1 spread to two other homes before being brought under control.

    Upon arrival, firefighters found a vacant two-story dwelling fully involved. Residences to either side were also significantly damaged by radiant heat.

    The department responded with a quint and two engines. Mutual aid was also requested from the Montgomery County Independence Rural Fire Department who responded with an additional engine.

    Fast-spreading fire tactics may dictate writing off the structures originally involved and focusing all resources on preventing the fire from spreading. Care must be taken to prevent lines and firefighters from being positioned in places where they could be endangered by collapsing buildings or other factors.
    The above photo shows an old “mixed multiple” occupancy with add-ons. The original building is of Type III construction (brick and joist) while the add-ons are made of wood frame. Note the separation distance between the two structures presents an exposure concern if a fire should occur.
