A six unit apartment building burned in Springfield early on June 26.
A first alarm assignment was dispatched at 1:20 a.m. to 511 Hancock Street for the report of a structure fire at that location.
The District 2 Chief arrived on scene first and confirmed the working structure fire in a three-story, wood-frame six family dwelling, advising that he had heavy fire venting on the Charlie side of the structure.
Companies initiated an aggressive interior attack with large caliber handlines on all three floors but were forced to evacuate the structure when the cockloft became involved in fire.
Additionally, Engine 3's apparatus developed pump problems forcing the temporary shut down of their attack lines!T
The building was classified as a total loss and 14 people have been displaced. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Units on scene: Engines 3, 8, 1 and 9 (RIT), Ladders 3 and 8, Rescue Squad and both District 1 and 2 Chiefs
