Fort Atkinson, WI, October 23, 2017—Firehouse Magazine has announced the winners of its fourth annual Station Design Awards program, which recognizes outstanding architecture and design from fire departments nationwide.
Gold, Silver and Bronze awards have been distributed across six categories in this prestigious competition: Career 1 and 2 departments, Satellite stations, Volunteer/Combination departments, Shared-facilities, and Renovated fire stations. This year, the Station Design Award judges also recommended an Outstanding Achievement award for one station. All participating entries will be published in the November issue of Firehouse Magazine and online within the Stations tab on Firehouse.com.
“Firehouse’s Station Design Awards Issue is a must-read for any department that’s planning a station project, whether it’s a renovation or a new station,” said Firehouse Group Publisher Gregory Toritto. “The innovative projects that are showcased each year serve as a guide and an inspiration as departments embark on projects of their own, from the smallest rural department to the largest metro.”
Janet Wilmoth, special projects director to Firehouse, noted that the typical fire station has changed significantly over the past 25 years due to the increased responsibilities picked up by fire departments across North America. “The judging of this year’s 43 entries was difficult for the judges because fire departments are more proactive in designing more in-station training opportunities, including diversity and increased focus on health and security of personnel in the stations. Every one of the entries is a winner for its personnel and community they serve,” she added.
Winners were selected by a panel of seven judges, including three fire chiefs, two architects, a risk manager and a fire engineer/architect with experience in fire station designs. The winning entries are as follows:
