NC Hazmat Crews Clean Up Leaking Rail Car's Chemical Spill

April 30, 2020
It took nearly two dozen Charlotte firefighters a little more than an hour to clean up hydrochloric acid that spilled from an unspecified railroad car at a facility in the southwest part of the city.

North Carolina hazmat crews cleaned up a chemical spill involving a rail car Wednesday morning.

The accident happened at about 10 a.m. at a facility in southwest Charlotte, WSOC-TV reports. That's when hydrochloric acid leaked from an unspecified train car.

Nearly two dozen Charlotte firefighters responded to the scene, and it took crews around 80 minutes to clean the spill. High winds at the time meant some nearby businesses were asked by the fire department to shelter in place, according to WSOC.

Once the spill was cleaned up, crews and their hazmat suits were decontaminated at the scene, which is the normal procedure for such an incident. No one was injured, and the responding firefighters were monitored by Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services.

The cause of the leak has not been determined.
