CA Hazmat Crews Investigate Possible Chlorine Leak

Multiple fire departments responded to the UC Santa Barbara campus in Isla Vista for reports of a possible chemical leak at a laboratory.

Hazardous Materials team members prepare to make entry to monitor for leaks at a building on the campus of UC Santa Barbara in Isla Vista, CA.

Hazardous Materials team members from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department were alerted to a possible hazmat situation Thursday morning on the campus of UC Santa Barbara.

Once crews arrived, they assembled to investigate a possible chlorine leak in a third floor lab located in Elings Hall. Officials evacuated the building then deployed teams with sensors to determine if there were any threats while shutting off chlorine tanks located on the roof.

After hazmat entry teams determined there was no threat they shifted their investigation to a possible faulty alarm sensor.

Companies conducted final investigations before turning Elings Hall back over to school officials.
