A 6-year-old boy and his mother were rescued from the balcony of their apartment unit that caught fire Monday morning on the Northwest Side.
The victims found themselves trapped in their second-floor apartment shortly after the blaze broke out at 10:45 a.m. at the Towering Oaks Apartments in the 7700 block of Oakdell Way.
A maintenance worker used a ladder to get the boy to safety. Firefighters helped his mother, who suffered smoke inhalation, walk down a stairwell.
A child with a candle was blamed for the blaze that caused $55,000 damage.
