N.J. Firefighters Rescue Two Stranded Swimmers

The Atlantic City Fire Department's Rescue Team saved two women who became stranded in the ocean near Caesars on Sunday night.
Firefighters responded to a call of two people stranded on an outfall pipe at 7:53 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Vincent Granese said.
It appeared the two women were swimming after lifeguards went off duty and then got pulled in, but grabbed onto the pipe and railing about 25 to 30 yards off shore, he said.
Four units were sent out -- the Marine Unit, a ladder and two engine companies -- Granese said.
The Platoon 1 Rescue Unit led by Capt. Thomas Smith brought the women in. Firefighter John Slattery injured his foot while helping to get the women off the pipe, Granese said. Battalion Chief Michael Dixon was in command of the water rescue.
"It was a good night," Granese said. "Tonight we had good conditions. It was a good rescue. That's what these guys are trained for, and they do their job well."
