Houston Building Collapse Kills Three Workers, Injures Another

A 15-story building under construction was too unstable for Houston firefighters to enter while they were on the scene after the apparent collapse of part of the second floor into the first floor.

Three people died and a fourth was injured Monday after a 15-story building under construction collapsed in West Houston.

The stairwell collapsed, reported KHOU-TV, citing the Houston Fire Department.

All of the 240 construction workers at the site had been accounted for, KHOU reported, and the stairwell collapse was being investigated.

The accident occurred at around 1:30 p.m., according to reports.

The building was to be the headquarters of Marathon Oil, the Houston Chronicle reported.

While firefighters were on the scene, the building was too unstable to enter, Assistant Fire Chief Ruy Lozano told KTRK-TV.

A view from above showed the apparent collapse of part of the second floor into the first floor, KPRC-TV reported. A worker told the station he’d been on the ground floor when it happened and that several floors of a stairwell seemed to have collapsed.

“Out of nowhere, I hear a loud banging sound,” the worker told KPRC. “It sounded like a building was collapsing, which, I checked out, it didn’t happen, but all I saw was the parking building ... we’re very close to the parking building. All you see is a bunch of smoke.”
