Firefighters rescued a worker who was trapped for over an hour beneath a building that was under construction collapsed in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, injuring several people who also were rescued.
D.C. Fire & EMS crews responded at around 3:30 p.m. to the scene of a "full collapse" five-story structure in the northwest part of the district, the fire department stated in a series of online updates. A special operations team was called in when it was known that at least one construction worker was trapped beneath the rubble.
Firefighters cut through the wreckage to reach the worker, who was then taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries and condition weren't immediately known, but he was conscious.
Crews also saved four other workers from the collapse, according to the department. They were taken to the hospital, and their injuries weren't considered life-threatening.
Two nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Chris Geldart, acting deputy mayor for public safety, told WTOP-FM that search dogs were being used to search the site despite all being accounted for.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
