Photos: Worker Trapped in Los Angeles Trench Collapse
Los Angeles firefighters rescued a trapped construction worker and provided care two other works at a trench collapse Saturday morning.
The workers were involved in a trenching project in the side yard of a home when the four-foot-deep trench that had "makeshift shoring" gave way. A concrete slab fell along with soil, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told ABC 7 Los Angeles.
Prior to the fire department's arrival, one victim had self-extricated with a non-life-threatening leg injury.
Technical rescue crews worked to free a second worker trapped by the collapse. Crews secured the trench and provided medical care as they worked to extricate the victim.
Rescuers were able to free the victim in about 80 minutes and he was taken to a local trauma hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
An additional victim came forward later complaining of back pain and was transported to a local hospital.
