A pair of construction workers died Friday when a trench they were working in collapsed in Catonsville.

The Baltimore County Fire Dept. confirmed the deaths Friday night. The names of the victims were not released.

Baltimore County firefighters said just before noon that they were conducting a rescue operation after the two construction workers became trapped in the 500 block of Academy Road.

Firefighters were on the scene working to extricate the workers, the department said. Fire spokesperson Lt. Twana Allen said later Friday afternoon that both workers were in “extremely critical condition” and that the scene was still active.

At one point in the afternoon, the roughly two dozen firefighters on the scene stopped working and placed a tarp over the hole.

Police officials spoke with workers on the scene. One worker yelled, “No!” and kicked and punched his work truck. Two workers embraced and cried.
