DE Firefighters Rescue 20 Stranded on Carnival Ride

June 8, 2023
Mill Creek firefighters were standing by at the carnival when the ride stopped.

People aboard the Zipper at a church carnival in Milltown won't likely forget their experience.

A malfunction left 20 riders stranded for a time.

Firefighters with Mill Creek Fire Company, who were on the scene for a standby, heard a loud noise and headed to investigate.

When crews discovered the 60-foot high-ride was stopped with 20 people aboard, they called for aerial assistance for the high-angle rescue, Mill Creek fire officials said.

The riders were assisted to the ground by firefighters aboard aerial platforms from the Christiana and Brandywine Hundred Fire Companies and Mill Creek Fire Company’s ladder truck. Ground ladders also were placed against the ride to assist.

Two people were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Officials noted that the ride had passed an inspection before it started operating at the carnival.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
