Portland firefighters used airbags and hydraulic tools to extricate two people trapped in their car after a tractor-trailer crashed and flipped over on top of the vehicle.

Oregon firefighters pulled two people from a car that was pinned beneath an overturned tractor-trailer Wednesday.

The accident happened just before 4:30 a.m. along Interstate 5 at Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard, Portland Fire & Rescue stated in an online post. A tractor-trailer was involved in a crash that tipped the rig over and onto a car on the interstate.

Photos from the scene show the trailer of the semi crumpling much of the car's roof. Despite the extensive damage, the fire department said the car's two trapped occupants were not severely injured, and firefighters were able to safely remove them from the vehicle.

"Several pieces of technical equipment, air bags, hydraulic cutters/spreaders, were used to extricate the two people from the vehicle," the department stated.

The car's occupants were taken to the hospital, but no details were given about their conditions. It was unclear if the tractor-trailer's driver was injured in the crash.
