A driver suffered major injuries late Saturday night when he crashed his recreational vehicle into a parked tractor trailer and became trapped underneath it, according to the Chula Vista Fire Department.

The crash occurred Saturday around 10:40 p.m. near the intersection of L Street and 5th Avenue in Chula Vista.

A fire department battalion commander told OnScene TV the man was driving east on L Street and crossed over into the westbound lanes where he struck two parked cars before slamming into a 53-foot-long semi trailer.

The RV struck the trailer with such force that it forced it onto the sidewalk and became wedged underneath it. Chula Vista Fire Battalion Chief Brendan Barahura told OnScene TV it took 40 minutes to get the man out of the vehicle.

"Firefighters had to stabilize the trailer as well as the RV," Barahura said.

Two dogs were also rescued from the RV. Video from the scene shows both animals walking with police officers with no visible injuries. The dogs were taken to a shelter, Barahura said.

The driver of the RV was taken to the hospital with major injuries, he said.
