Firefighter Cancer Support Network Names Chief Michael Wisko as New Chairman
PASADENA, CA - As the Firefighter Cancer Support Network enters its third decade of providing critical resources and education to the fire service, it is proud to announce Chief Michael Wisko as its new Chairman.
Wisko is entering his 40th year in the fire service. He began his career as an EMT in Beaumont, Texas in 1986 and, in 1988, accepted a Firefighter/Paramedic position in his hometown of Galveston, Texas. His brilliant 31-year career in Galveston culminated with an appointment to Chief of the Department in 2013.
Wisko’s talent has spread far beyond Galveston. In 1995, he was appointed to the Firefighter Advisory Committee for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP). He served in this statewide capacity until 2020, when he was chosen to lead the Commission as Agency Chief.
Michael’s passion for helping fire fighters extends beyond the TCFP. After losing multiple friends, and battling through several rounds of skin cancer himself, Wisko decided to do something about it, and joined the Firefighter Cancer Support Network’s Board of Directors, where he has been a fierce advocate for stronger education and prevention efforts to reduce cancer in the fire service.
“Firefighters and their families will face many challenges during their multiple years of courageous service,” states Wisko. “When they receive a Cancer diagnosis they deserve all the support and guidance they have earned. The Firefighter Cancer Support Network is here to make that a reality and to be there for them during their toughest battle. It is my honor and privilege to be a part of this organization.”
Wisko was elevated to Chairman by the FCSN Board at their quarterly meeting on January 31st and has hit the ground running. Among his priorities are continuing the mission of supporting firefighters and their families when they are fighting cancer, ensuring the hundreds of volunteers affiliated with FCSN have the resources and support they need to continue their important work and to ensure that FCSN continues to grow into a global organization.
