NORTH HAVEN, Conn.
--
A portion of the Hartford Turnpike was being evacuated Tuesday morning in North Haven because of a ruptured gas main.
A section of the roadway was closed just before 11 a.m.
Police said the area north of Upper State Street was being evacuated. They said about 20 to 25 people were evacuated from their homes because of the incident., but that everyone was being allowed back inside just before noon.
Members of Southern Gas Company said the leak had been secured just after 11 a.m. They said a water company working in the area ruptured a high-pressure service gas line. They said water filled the hole, making repairs more difficult.
Members of the fire and police departments and gas company were at the leak late Tuesday morning. Officials said repairing the leak, which would included draining water from the hole, would take several hours. The road remained closed while crews worked to make repairs.
