Two firefighters were treated in Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown for heat exhaustion following a fire Thursday at Bally Block Co. in Bally.

No major damage was reported from the flames, which ignited shortly before 9 a.m. after a piece of metal went through the suction system of a large machine used to chop wood, officials said.

The fire was quickly contained, but firefighters needed about 1 1/2 hours to extinguish the flames.

"It was a challenge getting to the fire, with all the heat," said Chief Jeff Reitnauer of the Eastern Berks Fire Department.

He said the equipment is expected to be working again by this afternoon.

The names of the firefighters taken to the hospital were not released.

Two other firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, Reitnauer said.
