An Alabama patient pulled out a gun and fired shots inside a Birmingham ambulance Saturday morning before jumping behind the wheel.
The Birmingham rescue personnel were not shot, but were treated at a hospital after the incident.
The ambulance crew picked up the woman at the baggage claim in the airport about 10:40 a.m. after she complained of feeling dizzy, Chief Charles Gordon told al.com reporters.
They were headed to a hospital when the woman suddenly fired three shots. The medic managed to jump out of the moving ambulance following a struggle. The driver pulled over and got out, the chief said.
Police officers spotted the unit and gave chase. The rig was eventually stopped, and the woman was taken into custody.
