Aug. 24 -- An 18-year-old man is in custody for the death of an off-duty Detroit firefighter who was found shot inside his home.
Police arrested the man at 2:45 p.m. Thursday in the area of Southfield and Ford roads, Detroit Police Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood said.
Authorities released few details about a possible motive or the suspect, but said they believe he may have known the victim, 29-year-old Jack Wiley II.
Wiley's body was found Tuesday morning inside his home on the 15000 block of Penrod on Detroit's west side.
His house was ransacked, and his black Ford Expedition was missing. The vehicle was found, burned, at Tillman and Poplar.
Wiley followed in his father's footsteps when he joined the Detroit Fire Department in November 2014. The elder Jack Wiley served as a senior fire chief before retiring.
Jack Wiley II spent most of his career with Engine 57, and had recently moved to Squad 1, Detroit Fire Commissioner Eric Jones told the Free Press this week.
Wiley was known for his kind spirit and enthusiasm for firefighting.
"He was just a wonderful person who loved his job," Jones said. "He loved serving the citizens, he loved fighting fires, he loved providing medical care and protecting the citizens."
