An off-duty Iowa firefighter who was bicycling early Monday was killed in a hit-and-run accident, authorities said.

Grandview firefigher Devin Estabrook, 49, was biking just before 5 a.m. along U.S. Highway 61 in Muscatine when he was hit by an unknown vehicle, the Muscatine Police Department said. After hitting Estabrook, the vehicle fled the scene.

"It is with sincere sadness we say goodbye to one of our own Firefighters; Devin Estabrook, due to a tragic accident on August 12th, 2019," the City of Grandview said in an update on social media. "We send our prayers and condolences to his family, friends, coworkers, and firefighters."

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the incident with help from Muscatine police.

"Devin Estabrook was very well known and liked by many within the community," Grandview Fire & Rescue stated in a Facebook post. "Those who knew Devin would agree he was a selfless person who always met you with a smile, and a joke to brighten your whole day."
