There were several developments in Escondido on Monday regarding the coronavirus, including the news that an Escondido firefighter/paramedic has been infected with COVID -19.
The city learned on Sunday that the firefighter tested positive and that several days earlier, while off duty, had come in contact with other people who later tested positive, a news release from the city said.
The firefighter had been at work but had shown no symptoms at the time, the city said. It is unlikely, the city said, that the firefighter/paramedic infected patients he had helped but as a precaution the Escondido Fire Department will notify all patients that may have been contacted by the employee.
The firefighter is quarantined and at home and has very mild symptoms, the city said.
Other Escondido Fire Department staff who were in contact with the firefighter at work have no symptoms, tested negative for COVID-19, and are being quarantined and monitored according to procedures. Escondido Fire Chief Rick Vogt added, "The health and safety of our community remains our highest priority."
Meanwhile, Escondido City Manager Jeff Epp on Monday signed a Declaration of Emergency. The city can now enact emergency powers, as well as potentially gain access to federal and state relief funds. The declaration will be ratified by the City Council on Wednesday.
The city also announced that the public library and City Hall will be closed to the public until at least the end of the month.
Dixon Lake campground reservations and fishing will be closed starting Tuesday. Lake Wohlford will be closed for fishing starting Tuesday. Residents and visitors may still visit the lakes and grounds for recreation activities as long as they practice social distancing.
