The incident happened at around 3:45 a.m. as Irving Fire Department crews were working the scene of a five-vehicle crash along State Highway 183, KXAS-TV reports. That's when Yajaira Estrada Calderon, 23, drove a 2016 Dodge Challenger the wrong way through the accident scene, striking firefighter Aaron Donohue, 30, according to police.
Donohue, who has been with the department for just over four years, was taken to the hospital with severe injuries, but they weren't considered life-threatening, police said in a Monday news release.
"Aaron's medical condition remains serious and he is still in the hospital," the release stated. "He is progressing slowly but steadily."
