Retired FDNY Firefighter Dies of 9/11-Related Illness

A retired FDNY firefighter died last week from a 9/11-related illness.

Dennis A. Farrell served 11 years with Ladder Company 59 in the Bronx from 1991 to 2002, according to the Facebook page for FAU (Family Assistance Unit) Family. Farrell died Feb. 23 after battling an illness he contracted in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The exact cause of death was not released.

"We lost another FDNY brother to 9/11 illness," the Ray Pfeifer Foundation, a nonprofit that helpings 9/11 first responders with medical needs not covered by insurance, stated in an online post. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Dennis A. Farrell."

A viewing for Farrell will be held Tuesday in Thiellis, NY, with the funeral set for Wednesday in Garnerville. A private cremation will follow.
