A veteran Detroit firefighter died of injuries he suffered in an apparent road rage shooting at a gas station Monday.
Lt. Frank Dombrowski, 55, had driven from his Rochester Hills home and pulled into a Troy gas station just before 9:45 a.m. when the incident happened, WDIV-TV reports. He was followed into the parking lot by a man in a white Jeep Cherokee, and the two were involved in a traffic dispute.
According to Troy police, both men argued in the parking lot, and the confrontation continued to escalate. The Cherokee's driver allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire several times, wounding Dombrowski.
The accused shooter then fled the scene before turning himself in to police. Officials announced early Tuesday that Dombrowski had later died of his injuries from the shooting.
The incident remains under investigation.
During his nearly 30-year career with the Detroit Fire Department, Dombrowski received the Commissioner's Citation and the Medal of Valor. He also appeared in "Burn," a 2012 documentary about Detroit firefighters that was produced by Denis Leary.
“We are truly saddened by the loss of our Lieutenant Frank Dombrowski," Thomas Gehart, president of the Detroit Firefighters Association, said in a statement, according to WXYZ-TV. "Lieutenant Dombrowski was a great leader and mentor for the men and women in his command. His contributions will be greatly missed by the Detroit Fire Department and the citizens of Detroit.”
