A blazing inferno tore through a Brooklyn mixed-use building Sunday afternoon, injuring 11 people, including two firefighters, FDNY officials said.
The three-alarm fire quickly spread through the building on Sixth Ave. near 57th St. in Sunset Park, home to an e-bike shop and three residential apartments, police said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, which erupted in the three-story building about 4 p.m., the FDNY said. Firefighters arrived within minutes and called a third alarm as the blaze raged on.
Ten people, including one firefighter, were taken to area hospitals, where are they are expected to recover from their injuries.
One firefighter was treated at the scene.
A woman who lived on the second floor of the building had left to visit New Jersey for the day, and then she received a panicked call from a friend that her building had caught fire — with her children inside.
“When I came, I saw the firefighters breaking the ceiling because they were trying to get my kids out,” said Maria Leon. “I don’t know, I just saw them putting water all over the place.”
Leon, 37, watched as New York’s Bravest carried her son, daughter and their family dog to the safety of the street downstairs.
“And when they got my son, he told me he heard an explosion that came from downstairs,” Leon said. “My son went to the hospital. He has smoke inhalation that affected his asthma. He’s going to be OK.”
Leon and her family are seeking refuge at a hotel until they figure out their next move, and have been told the worst damage was to the apartment next-door.
The fire was under control just after 7:10 p.m., but not before nine people were displaced, FDNY and police officials said.
