Driver Charged with Striking PA Fire Truck

Oct. 4, 2023
The Middletown, PA Volunteer Fire Department was responding to a call when it was struck.

An Annville woman was cited last week after crashing into a Middletown Volunteer Fire Co. truck on its way to a fire, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Paula C. Maurer, 56, was driving south on North Deodate Road and had a green light at the East Harrisburg Pike ( Route 230) intersection in Londonderry Township when the Sept. 28 crash happened, state police said.

But under state law, the firetruck — with lights and sirens activated — had the right-of-way because the firefighters were headed to an emergency. They were on their way to assist with a fire in Elizabethtown when the crash happened, state police said.

The truck was going east on the Harrisburg Pike and slowed at the red light, then moved into the intersection, according to state police.

State police said Maurer failed to yield to the firetruck and crashed into the driver’s side.

Maurer’s car had to be towed from the scene, and she was taken to the Penn State Hershey Medical Center with minor injuries, state police said. Troopers cited her with duty of driver on approach of emergency vehicles.

State police said the firetruck could be driven away from the scene. Middletown officials said no firefighters were injured.
