A collision Sunday afternoon involving two Iowa fire department vehicles left a veteran firefighter dead.
Ionia Firefighter Tony Hoffman, 43, died of his injuries at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, KCHA reported.
Iowa State Patrol reported a fire truck and the Polaris Ranger that Hoffman was operating were trying to pass a slower-moving tractor when the rig hit the back of the UTV.
Hoffman was ejected as it rolled. He was flown to the hospital where he died.
Monday morning, the Ionia Community Fire Department announced on its Facebook page: "Yesterday we lost one of our very dedicated firefighters as he was responding to a field fire. 43-year-old Tony Hoffman, a 17-year veteran of the Ionia Fire Dept. was involved in a UTV rollover accident and passed away due to injuries suffered in the mishap. Tony was very dedicated to the Dept. and the community and this huge loss is and will be felt by many. RIP brother "
