April 14, 2022
The Los Angeles County coroner said firefighter Jonathan Flagler suffocated at the fire and had methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death.

A coroner's report indicated that Los Angeles County firefighter Jonathan Flagler suffered a heart attack and suffocated, leading to his death at a Jan. 6 house fire in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The autopsy also indicated that Flagler had methamphetamine in his system, and was COVID-19 positive, calling them "significant conditions" related to his death, according to CBS Los Angeles

Los Angeles County firefighters responded to an early morning reported house fire and found a working fire in the attic of the home.

At one point, Flagler called a mayday.

According to CBS Los Angeles, Flagler's family intends to file a lawsuit, citing failures by the fire department led to his death.

"Our lawsuit will establish that the tragic death of Los Angeles County Firefighter Jonathan Flagler was caused when on-scene commanders failed to keep track of the firefighters inside the burning residence, maintain radio contact with those firefighters, and promptly rescue Jonathan," attorney Thomas Johnston told the television station.
