Texas medics who stopped to aid a stranded motorist wound up calling for help themselves.
The suspect, who was taken into custody near the scene, opened fire on the ambulance, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
The medics were not injured in the incident that occurred just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, KHOU reported.
The man's car was stopped in the middle of the road, and he had called deputies for help. The ambulance drove up and the crew was ready to assist when the suspect started shooting, the station reported.
Deputies said the man may have been experiencing a mental breakdown. He was transported to a hospital for an evaluation.
They also question whether the vehicle was actually inoperable.
