An off-duty firefighter died after a crash involving a man who had stolen cars, including a police cruiser, and assaulted a woman.
Nettie Firefighter Brody Allan Hanna was killed when his vehicle was hit by a stolen Ford F-150 driven by Dustin Young, who was on a crime spree, WSAZ reported.
The incident started after Young overpowered a driver who had stopped at a wreck he was involved in. He went to a home and assaulted a woman with a hammer, police reported.
After the attack, which left the woman with life-threatening injuries, he sped away in the truck. As he was traveling at a high rate of speed, it hit Hanna's vehicle.
He then stole a Summersville police cruiser and took off again.
Young was finally stopped and arrested by Nicholas County deputies.
When he appeared to lose consciousness, he was given Narcan by officers.
He is facing multiple criminal charges, including attempted murder, burglary, assault during the commission of a felony, grand larceny, driving under the influence causing death, and fleeing with reckless indifference.
