A veteran Lexington fire captain is fighting for his life after suffering injuries battling a house fire early Tuesday.
"The crews made an interior attack. The fire changed rapidly and caused them to have to change tactics very quickly. We're still trying to process all that to determine what happened," Lexington Fire Chief Paul Jarrett told WFMY.
Firefighters were ordered to evacuate. All but Capt. Ronnie Metcalf made it out.
He was located and carried out by a RIT team. He was treated immediately before being flown to a trauma center.
Jarrett stuggled to keep his composure while discussing the incident.
"I've worked here for 34 years. It's not uncommon to get injuries it's not uncommon for them to get hurt. These are the most significant injuries I've seen to a firefighter," he said.
