Firehouse Magazine has announced the winners of its third annual Station Design Awards program, which recognizes outstanding architecture and design from fire departments nationwide.

Firehouse Magazine has announced the winners of its third annual Station Design Awards program, which recognizes outstanding architecture and design from fire departments nationwide.

Gold, Silver and Bronze awards have been distributed across five categories in this prestigious competition: Career departments, Satellite stations, Volunteer/Combination departments, Shared facilities and Renovated fire stations. For the first time in the Station Design Awards, the judges recommended a Platinum award for one station as well. All participating entries will be published in the November issue of Firehouse Magazine and online within the Stations tab on Firehouse.com.

“Trends in station design are ever-changing based on the evolving needs of the fire service and the communities it serves,” said Greg Toritto, group publisher, Firehouse. “Firehouse’s Station Design Awards issue continues to highlight the best-of-the-best in fire station design for volunteer, combination and career departments. Our hope is that these projects will provide other departments with valuable insight, ideas and guidelines as they embark on projects in their communities.”

Janet Wilmoth, special projects director to Firehouse, added that fire stations have significantly evolved over the past 20 years due to the increased responsibilities of fire departments across the country. “This year every one of the 40 facilities submitted to the Station Design Awards had fire sprinklers installed, setting an example of progressive fire prevention in their community,” she said. “Each of these new fire/emergency facilities is designed for quicker response times, diversity in stations, and with an increasing focus on firefighter health and safety.”

Winners were selected by a panel of five judges including two fire chiefs, two architects and a civil engineer/fire chief with experience in fire station designs. The winning entries are as follows:
