Phoenix to Employ Drones for Mountain Rescues

Feb. 18, 2022
The Phoenix Fire Department will start using drones this summer to enhance their mountain rescue operations.

Phoenix firefighters will start using drones this summer to enhance their mountain rescue operations after the city’s public safety subcommittee approved their request.

Executive Assistant Chief Scott Walker told KJZZ 91.5, sending a drone to find a stranded hiker could be more efficient.

"Oftentimes we send crews up from all sides of the mountain to try to find that victim, this would significantly reduce the amount of impact on our firefighters hiking up and also find that person much faster," Walker said.

Fire officials said the department will have policies and procedures to protect the public's privacy and will have them reviewed by city officials for final approval.

Before they begin to use the drones on June 1, the fire department will start a community education program.
