July 27, 2021
The Uniformed Fire Officers have unveiled a one-of-a-kind commemorative coin in honor of those who fell on 9/11 and others who have died from WTC-related cancers.

NEW YORK CITY: The FDNY-Uniformed Fire Officers Association, the organization representing over 8,000 active and retired New York City Fire Officers, have announced a major fundraiser to aid the widows, children, and families of fallen New York City Firefighters, who pass away while on active duty.  The Bravest Scholarship Fund, which was established to help both Firefighters and Fire Officers’ children after their death, is funded through contributions. In honor of the 20th Anniversary of September 11th, 2001, the UFOA will be fundraising for this cause through the sale of one-of-a-kind commemorative “Challenge Coins” ahead of the 20th Anniversary.  The coin depicts an image of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the Shanksville, Pennsylvania field where nearly 3,000 Americans were killed on September 11, 2001. The three locations are draped in an American Flag on the coin, symbolizing patriotism and unity in the wake of that infamous day.

The coin also depicts the phrases “20 Years” and “Never Forget,” which honors the lives and legacies of those who perished on that fateful day. Inside the coin is the seal of the FDNY-Uniformed Fire Officers Association, bearing their axiom, “In Unity There is Strength.”

The first-of-its-kind coin was designed as a symbol of the unity of Fire Officers and all 9/11 First Responders who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.

The following statement has been released by James McCarthy, Treasurer of the FDNY-Uniformed Fire Officers Association:

“The 20th Anniversary of September 11th, 2001, marks a solemn milestone among New York City Fire Officers, New Yorkers, and all Americans.   We created this coin to demonstrate that ‘Never Forget,’ are not just words for us and to ensure that the families of the victims  of these  attacks will always have our support and in honor of the fallen firefighters killed on September 11, 2001, as well as those brothers and sisters who have died from WTC-related illness since,” said McCarthy.
