WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A longtime friend of the nation's fire and emergency services will be honored for his efforts.

Congressman Peter King, R-NY, will receive the legislator of the year award during the 23rd annual Congressional Fire Services Institute's dinner in April.

"He's done just an outstanding job. He's a true advocate for the fire service," said CFSI Executive Director Bill Webb.

King, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, has always kept emergency services officials abreast of issues that may affect them, Webb said.

The award is given annually to a legislator for their outstanding contributions to the emergency services.

Last year's recipient was Congressman Chris Dodd, D-Conn.

Webb said Wednesday he hopes for a good turnout from fire and rescue officials from across the country. "This is a unique opportunity. While I understand the difficult economy, I think it's important for fire service leaders to visit their elected officials."

In addition to visiting Capitol Hill, there are a number of seminars addressing issues such as highway safety, budgets, communications, fire sprinklers and an update of legislative issues the new Congress will have to discuss.

"There are issues affecting both career and volunteer departments," Webb said. "It's very important we have a good show of support."
