INDIANAPOLIS --

Firefighters were called to an apartment building on the city's east side early Thursday morning after flames and smoke began pouring out of the roof of the building.

Fire broke out at one of the buildings in the Somerset apartment complex, at 38th Street and Emerson Avenue, at about 4:15 a.m.

Firefighters were able to evacuate more than 20 people from the building within a few minutes, and no one was injured.

"I woke up and came running out the apartment," said Herman Mitchell. "Our apartment, there wasn't any fire."

The fire was put out just before 5 a.m. At least 12 residents are temporarily without a place to live. Efforts began to relocate those victims.

The apartment owner told police that some work had been done earlier in the day to put a new roof on the building.

Damage was estimated at $50,000.
