MIAMI --

A kitten had the Miami Fire Department to thank for saving one of its nine lives on Thursday.

A resident called the fire department after hearing the kitten meow from inside a storm drain near 32nd Street and Northwest 18th Avenue.

First, firefighters tried to coax the kitten out of the drain using a pole. When that didn't work, they brought in a hose and started spraying water, the one thing that most cats hate.

That did the trick. The kitten was flushed out, a little wet but perfectly OK.

The kitten was off to a new, warm home on Thursday. The resident who first heard its cry took the new friend home with him.

The kitten's new owner said he would name him Sewer, or Sewey for short.
