ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. --

Two men working on a home in unincorporated Adams County were killed Monday morning when the basement exploded and caught fire.

The men's identities are not known. The people who live in the home, located at 71st Avenue and Zuni Street, were not inside, said Adams County Sheriff's Sgt. Candi Baker.

Adams County deputies, who were called to the structure fire at around 11 a.m., arrived to see the home billowing with smoke. Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters found two dead men in the basement.

Baker said the men were contractors who were using a highly flammable adhesive to strip the tile from the basement floor when something ignited, exploded, and sparked a fire. Neighbors said they heard a loud boom.

The victims have not been positively identified so their names are unavailable at this time. It's not known if the homeowners have been notified about the fire.

The home suffered significant damage on the inside.

Unincorporated Adams County is about 10 miles north of Denver.
