A 68-year-old woman in Titusville, Fla., died in a house fire Wednesday after making a 911 call for help, according to Local 6 News.

Firefighters said Mildred Bell called 911 at about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday to report flames inside her home located on Wendy Lee Street.

Her son, who lives nearby, noticed the blaze and attempted to rescue his mother but was turned away by firefighters.

"During a search and firefighting effort, they found the victim in a front bedroom of the house," Titusville police spokesman Scott Gaenicke said. "She was brought out. She was unresponsive, wasn't breathing and had no pulse."

Bell was transported to Parrish Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Firefighters said the fire may have sparked in the attic.

"To see the house like it is, it is hard to imagine what she went through trying to get out," Bell's grandson Charlie Devine said. "All I wish I could say to her right now is that I hope she is living a better life now in Heaven and smiling down upon us."
