CHARLOTTE, N.C. --

Firefighters spent the night at a south Charlotte home after battling a massive fire there Monday night.

More than 60 firefighters responded to the 17,000-square-foot home under construction on Winged Bourne Road off Gleneagles Road. The eastbound lanes of Gleneagles Road remain closed to traffic.

Fire officials received the first of several 911 calls just before 7:30 p.m.

"The first firefighters on scene reported heavy fire and smoke conditions and immediately called for backup," said Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Mark Basnight.

Fire officials said the fire took nearly an hour to get under control.

They said the home was under construction and unoccupied.

Dawn Riehm lives nearby and could see the smoke from several miles away.

"We were coming down Park Road and you could see the heavy smoke and flames shooting into the air, but we didn't see exactly where it was coming from," she said.

Fire crews are working to find the cause of the fire.
