A three-alarm fire broke out at a Bloomfield apartment along Liberty Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
There were reports of heavy smoke.
Fire investigators confirmed a man fell asleep smoking on a sofa, causing the apartment building to go up in flames.
When emergency crews arrived all three residents inside the building escaped from a back door.
The fire started on the third floor and it was heavily damaged. The second floor had a lot of water damage.
Before crews arrived, there was man who ran inside to rescue people.
He came out of building out of breath.
