Ten fire companies and 70 firefighters could not get to the house quick enough to save the mother and child.

A 21-year-old mother and her 18-month-old child were killed Friday in a house fire in New Castle County.

The fire destroyed the house on the 200 block of Holly Cove Lane in Newark, where they family had lived for a few months.

Jim Diluzio, president of the Christiana Fire Company, said 10 fire companies and 70 firefighters could not get to the house quick enough to save the mother and child. He said the blaze was deadly because it moved so quickly.

The fire started just before noon. One of the victims was found upstairs at the house. The victims died at Christiana Hospital.

The fire marshal is going through the rubble to determine the cause of the fire.
