Chatanooga, TN -- Chattanooga firefighters were kept busy on fires at two businesses on Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to a fire at American Plastics at 5910 Quintas Loop at 7:25 p.m.

Battalion Chief Clay Ingle said the fire was located toward the rear of the large warehouse, forcing firefighters to run about a thousand feet of hoseline to get to the fire.

With lots of combustible materials located near the fire, Chief Ingle called for two extra engine companies as a precaution, but it remained a single alarm fire. Chief Ingle said the building's sprinkler system helped contain the fire until firefighters arrived to finish extinguishing the blaze. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.

Fire broke out at Nu-Foam Products at 1101 Wisdom St. Tuesday around 8:30 p.m.

Chattanooga firefighters arrived to see smoke and flames coming from what's called the penthouse area of the plant, which is 40 to 50 feet tall.

Chattanooga firefighters made quick entry into the plant and had the fire out within 15 minutes. Battalion Chief David Arnold said the plant's sprinkler system did a good job of containing the fire until firefighters could get in place. A two-alarm response was initially requested to bring in additional firefighters and equipment, but Chief Arnold cancelled their response when it became clear the firefighters already on the scene were getting the fire under control quickly. No injuries were reported.

Tim MaHarrey, general manager of Nu-Foam, believes the fire probably started from a mechanical or electrical malfunction in the penthouse. Mr. MaHarrey said damages were limited and that portion of the plant should be up and running again in two to three days. Nu-Foam makes carpet padding.
