A 41-year veteran Boston firefighter has been tapped to be the interim fire commissioner.
John Hasson was selected for the position by Boston Mayor Martin Walsh on Monday.
"The Boston Fire Department will be in great hands under the leadership of John Hasson,” Walsh said in a prepared statement.. “I’m grateful for his service and his commitment to fulfilling the vision of the Boston Fire Department as we work together to improve the services we provide the City of Boston.”
Hasson served in the role of acting chief for the last six months, and was responsible for overseeing all divisions, including field services, fire alarm, fire prevention, and training.
Walsh made his selection hours after taking over as mayor.
Prior to that assignment, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department.
Hasson joined the ranks of the Boston Fire Department in 1973 and served as a Division Commander in Downtown Boston.
A former U.S. Marine, Hasson is a 1977 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Hasson's father was a captain with the department for 30 years.
