Oct. 2--After six days and more than 2,600 acres burned, the Canyon Fire along the border of Riverside and Orange counties was 95 percent contained on Sunday night, according to fire officials.
"The fire hasn't grown in a few days, and now the firefighters are just mopping up and making sure all the hot spots are extinguished," Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said. "It's not 100 percent contained until we have a line all around it, and it's just steep, rugged terrain."
The blaze, which ignited Monday afternoon near the 91 freeway between Corona and Anaheim, has led firefighters into the hills and mountains of the Cleveland National Forest.
At one point, the fire required 195 engines, 12 helicopters, five air tankers, 18 dozers and 1,910 personnel to fight it. By Sunday, 186 personnel and 12 engines were battling the fire.
The Forest Service's Burned Area Emergency Response arrived Saturday to help stabilize the roads and slopes of the burned area so they don't erode when it rains.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire damaged four homes, a commercial building, and another outbuilding, and threatened 1,900 structures at its peak. Residents in neighboring communities were ordered to evacuate, but those orders were lifted Wednesday.
