It was a sound all too familiar to Comstock Fire Rescue personnel -- crunching metal.
They heard it early Monday as one of their rigs was hit by a car on an icy highway -- just a little over a month after a similar incident.
The driver of the car that slammed into the fire truck Monday said she was unable to slow or stop due to icy conditions. She was transported for minor injuries while no firefighters were hurt, MidMichiganNow reported.
After the Dec. 13 incident in which a box truck struck a police cruiser and three fire department vehicles, Comstock Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Thompson urged people to slow down especially in inclement weather.
He said he knows just how lucky they are that crews weren't seriously hurt. Two were treated for minor injuries after the previous wreck.
“I think more often than not I see people just going too fast when we are out working on scenes. And, even if we have one lane blocked, the vehicles are still passing our scene at a pretty high rate of speed," Thompson said.
In 2017, Comstock Fire & Rescue Chief Edward Switalski was struck and killed while operating at an incident on I-94 near where last month's crash occurred.
You know that is the worse case scenario. Every time we respond to a highway, we remember what had happened to Ed," Thompson said.
Oshtemo Township has loaned Comstock an engine until the rigs are back in service.
