An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death of D.C. firefighter who was stricken on duty Saturday.

Firefighter Technician James J. McRae III, 34, was on duty at Engine Company 20 when he started experiencing shortness of breath.

Advanced life support measures were administered by paramedics at his station. He was transported to Sibly Hospital, but later transferred to Washington Hospital Center, said Battalion Chief Kenneth Crosswhite.

The 17-year veteran was usually the tiller, but was the driver of the engine on his last day on duty.

He had been on a number of calls during the shift, Crosswhite said. McRae's death brings the D.C. Fire Department's Line-of-Duty death toll to 99 in the department's history.
