A Maryland firefighter died New Year's Day from COVID-19 complications, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
Bryan "Hammy" P. Hamilton, 42, a firefighter-EMT at Naval District of Washington Fire and Emergency Services Indian Head station, contracted the virus Dec. 14, the USFA said in an alert Wednesday. He died Friday at the University of Maryland's Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata.
According to his obituary, Hamilton served as a Navy firefighter for 18 years. He also was "a devoted, lifetime member" of the Bryans Road Volunteer Fire Department and was a captain and engineer with the agency. Previously, Hamilton had been a member of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, Company 12.

"The brotherhood, comradery, and deeply rooted relationships he formed during his lifetime as a firefighter gave him great joy," his obituary stated.
