Dec. 20--A driver lost control of a sport utility vehicle that went off the roadway and crashed into a movie theater building in Huntington, police said Monday.

The female driver, who was extricated from her Jeep Grand Cherokee about 7 p.m. Sunday, suffered head injuries, and was in and out of consciousness after the accident, a fire department rescuer said. She was taken by ambulance from the scene at the Cinema Multiplex theater on Wall Street to Huntington Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Huntington First Assistant Fire Chief Ken Cochrane said he responded to the accident with other volunteer firefighters, police and Huntington First Aid Squad volunteers.

The area around the movie theater is often crowded with pedestrians at that time on a Sunday night, Cochrane said. "Thank God it missed everybody," he said. "She must have been making a left turn, and just spun out of control, turned and went into the building."

The damage to the movie theater building appeared relatively minor, Cochrane said, with no apparent structural damage.

No information was available Monday night from police regarding the possible cause of the crash.
