Two Lexington firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat-related injuries during a blaze that broke out and caused extensive damage to a restaurant.

The Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen in the Andover area near Hamburg sustained extensive damage in a fire that left two firefighters injured Saturday afternoon.

The firefighters were taken to a local hospital to be treated for heat-related injuries, said Battalion Chief Jordan Saas of the Lexington Fire Department. The injuries were not life-threatening.

Firefighters who were called to the restaurant at Man o’ War Boulevard and Helmsdale Place at 3:40 p.m. found flames coming from the roof, he said.

General Manager Rob Bridges said that for about an hour before the fire was discovered, he and other employees inside had smelled something burning, but everyone thought it was the rib smoker.

Then, he said, “the kitchen started filling with smoke.”

Bridges said that’s when employees heard flames coming from the roof at the back of the building.

Bridges said about four employees were in the restaurant at the time, and all got out safely.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
